The San Marzano tomato arrived in Campania in 1770 as a gift from the Viceroy of Peru, Manuel de Amat, to the King of Naples, Ferdinand II.
It was cultivated in the territories of Agro Sarnese Nocerino, specifically in the village of San Marzano, from which it gets its name. Today called the 'King of tomatoes', the San Marzano tomato is known and appreciated worldwide for its characteristics that are highlighted in its transformation into peeled tomatoes.
The tomatoes are processed a few hours after harvest. They are blanched, peeled, and then whole tomatoes are placed in jars submerged in their own juice. This tomato is part of the Protected Designation of Origin (D.O.P.) products certified by the entity authorized by the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies, Agroqualità S.p.A.
Therefore, it is produced in accordance with the production regulations "Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese-Nocerino".
