Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and the only country where plants grow naturally in the wild.
The Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia's largest, is located in the mountains of the beautiful Bale National Park, 350 kilometers south of the capital, Addis Ababa. At an altitude of 1,800 meters, Arabica coffee grows naturally in the shade of large trees. For millennia, families have gone to the forest, harvested coffee beans, sun-dried them on suspended beds, roasted them, pounded them in a mortar, and offered coffee to guests as part of a solemn ceremony—a ritual of respect and hospitality.
The producers harvest ripe fruits by hand, selecting the reddest ones—a shared operation with the local fauna, respecting the relationship between humans and nature. The Presidium (Slow Food) of wild Harenna coffee, involving 60 families, promotes a shorter supply chain, quality and territory protection, and ensures the dignity and fair recognition of those involved.
The combined roasting profile and origin give these beans high aromatic intensity with citrus notes, and hints of floral and aromatic herb flavors. Medium body with a pleasant vanilla aftertaste.
